Royal and Derngate Theatres was formed in October 1999 to manage The Royal Theatre and Derngate as one combined organisation.
Before 1999, although both theatres are on adjacent sites and have some physical links front of house, they were managed by separate charitable trusts. However following separate applications for Lottery funding, the Arts Council of England suggested that a joint application might be received more favourably and as part of this process the organisations merged.
